Bartender notes
The French 75 takes its name from the Canon de 75 modele 1897 โ the French 75mm field gun used in World War I. It first appeared in print in The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. The gin vs cognac debate is real. Early versions used cognac โ richer and rounder. The gin version became dominant and is now the IBA standard. Offer the cognac version to guests who know their classics. Always use Brut โ dry and well chilled. Avoid Prosecco if possible; its residual sugar throws off the balance. A good Crรฉmant d'Alsace works beautifully at a fraction of the cost. This drink is deceptively strong. It looks light and celebratory but hits fast โ one of the most ordered cocktails at events for exactly that reason.
