Add simple syrup and bitters to a rocks glass. Add the large ice cube. Pour whiskey over the ice. Stir gently for 20-30 seconds until well chilled and diluted. Express an orange peel over the glass, run it along the rim, and place it as garnish.

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails on record โ€” and one of the most misunderstood. The goal is to enhance the whiskey, not mask it. Stir slowly, taste as you go, and let the dilution do its job. Bourbon gives a sweeter, rounder profile โ€” but rye is equally correct and brings spice and bite. Both are classic. The choice is yours.
